Spice Blend –

Ingredients -

  • 150 grams Pigeon Peas
  • 50 grams Raw Peanuts
  • 2 Tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Jaggery
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 3-5 cups Water

  1. Method –

    • Start by washing the pigeon peas and draining. Add 1 cup of water to the pressure cooker, along with the pigeon peas. Cook on a medium flame for 4 whistles – about 5-10 minutes. Using a hand blender, blend until smooth. If the mixture is too thick add in another cup of water and blend again.

    • To the dal, add in the peanuts, turmeric powder, ginger, chili powder, salt, black pepper, asafoetida, jaggery and the chopped tomatoes. Stir in all the ingredients, and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

    • In a skillet, add the ghee. Over a medium flame add in, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, bay leaf, cinnamon stick and curry leaves. Sauté for 2 minutes or until the seeds brown.

    • Add the spices into the simmering dal, along with the lemon juice. Cook for a further 5 minutes. Serve with roti or rice.
