Curried Red Lentils (Dal / Dahl)

Vegetarian dish consisting of lentils and pulses in a spiced sauce.

Spice Blend –

Ingredients –

  • 2 Onions finely chopped
  • 2 Cloves of Garlic finely chopped
  • 200 grams Spinach washed
  • 200 grams Dried Red Lentils washed & dried
  • 1 can Chopped Tomatoes
  • 1 can Coconut Milk
  • 500 ml Vegetable Stock
  • 1 tsp Olive Oil


Method –

  1. In a large skillet heat your oil over a medium flame. Add in the chopped onions and sauté for 5 minutes, until the just begin to brown. Add in your crushed, cumin, coriander and mustard. Letting them roast for a minute before adding in the remaining spices – cook for a further minute.
  2. Add in the coconut milk, vegetable stock, tomatoes and red lentils. Cook a medium to low flame for 20 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced.
  3. Just before serving add in the spinach and leave on a low flame until it wilts.
  4. Serve with steamed rice.
